Jason Townley of Townley Sound

I primarily work with local musicians from the 518 area, spanning from the upper regions of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake down to Saratoga, Ballston Spa, Albany, and Troy. Trying to keep things as local as possible has been a challenge, but lately, I’ve managed to do so while still maintaining a full-time job and fulfilling my roles as a dad, husband, and son.

In 2020, when the pandemic forced many into home office setups, I established a workspace at home. Though it takes up space, I was able to set up a very small setup that allows me to mix all the live shows I provide sound for. However, it does make storing equipment for road gigs difficult. This year (2024), I plan on building a garage to store the equipment and potentially move my home office there in the future. Trust me, it gets tight in here during wintertime. Equipment isn’t cheap, and keeping it warm as much as possible hopefully will promote longevity.

Over the last few years, I’ve been enhancing the live setup by separating Monitors and FOH. In 2016, I invested in a Midas M32, and by 2018, I transitioned fully to digital with two stage boxes connected via Cat 5 cables. In 2020, I added an X32 Rack on stage, enabling the separation of monitors and FOH. While this has increased the weight and size of the PA system, it necessitated improvements in transportation.

I’ll always remember fondly the little Jetta Diesel, which never had issues towing the enclosed trailer. However, it was time to retire it and opt for something more efficient for both my family and me. I’ve had my share of fun with Vans and Volkswagen Vanagons (I plan on restoring the Vanagon as soon as I build a garage). Nevertheless, I still desired the ability to detach the trailer, park it, and focus on family life, making a truck the only viable option.

Previously, I had a two-door Volkswagen GTI, and maneuvering the car seat in and out was quite challenging. Plus, it required premium fuel, making it costly to operate. Shortly after purchasing the Jetta wagon, I purchased an enclosed trailer, and everything changed. I could now pack the trailer and detach from the music life, returning to family life seamlessly. It was the best of both worlds until I started accumulating more gear and really loading up that trailer.
